Starset- Divisions (2019)

Starset has released two studio albums previously, Transmissions (2014), and Vessels (2017), which both followed a more cinematic approach to rock/metal, and Divisions carries that along very well.

Divisions is best known for the tracks Manifest (stylized as MANIFEST by Starset), and Trials (stylized as TRIALS by Starset), since those were released ahead of the album's release as singles. Both tracks are well composed, and are on-par with Starset's previous singles. The album as a whole, however, has a lighter sound than their previous albums, but retains the overall concept. The album's low points are generally the intros to the songs, especially the intro to Other Worlds Than These (stylized as OTHER WORLDS THAN THESE by Starset), which is, in my opinion, meaningless (almost) screeching.

If this is the direction Starset is going with their music, I doubt they'll have much longer in the spotlight. I doubt it'll age too well, in spite of sounding definitively "futuristic."

Overall score: 6/10
Genera score (rock/metal): 4/10

Real Estate- The Main Thing (2020)

I am a fan of Real Estate's work, and regard Days (2011) as their finest work, however, after Mondanile's departure, The Main Thing (2020) might just be better than Days.

As usual, The Main Thing has a relaxed and reassuring tone, almost reminiscent of pop music from the 1960s until the 1980s. The singles on The Main Thing are Paper Cup (which has a well-produced music video, and is an overall good track), as well as The Main Thing (the obligatory title track, which is another good track).

For being Real Estate's fifth album, it is remarkable that The Main Thing maintains the same consistent sound they had on their self-titled debut album. The sound of their work is almost timeless. The Main Thing, alongside the remainder of their work, will age well.

Overall score: 10/10
Genera score: 9/10 (Indie-Rock)
